WAYNESBURG, Pa. (January 30) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team played host to Geneva Wednesday evening for the first of what will be five-straight Presidents' Athletic Conference games to round out the regular season. Behind four double-digit performances from Yellow Jackets, Waynesburg rolled to a 76-62 win over the Golden Tornadoes.
Waynesburg (7-14, 5-7) started out strong, outscoring Geneva (2-17, 0-11) 16-11 in the first quarter of action. Although they did not extend their lead, the Yellow Jackets maintained that five-point advantage going into halftime with both teams scoring 15 in the second quarter leading to a 31-26 Waynesburg advantage.
Junior guard
Erin Joyce (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bishop Canevin) tied for the game-high at the half with nine points on three-of-eight from three-point range.
The Yellow Jackets kept the pressure on the Golden Tornadoes to start the third quarter, rattling off an 10-2 run capped off by a jumper by senior point guard
Monica Starre (Jewett, Ohio / Carrollton) to extend their lead to 13 points. With 39 seconds left in the period, Geneva managed to cut the deficit to five at 47-42. Fortunately for the Yellow Jackets, that was as close as the Golden Tornadoes' upset bid came as Waynesburg outscored Geneva 29-20 the rest of the way for the 14-point victory.
Starre and sophomore guard
Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. / West Shamokin) led the way offensively for Waynesburg, scoring 18 points each and bringing down eight and seven rebounds, respectively. Starre, who was a robust nine-for-11 from the field, also tied with Joyce for the game-high in assists, with four. Orlosky knocked down all six of her free throw attempts.
The other two Yellow Jackets to score in double-digits were freshman guard
Haley Porter (Belmont, Ohio / Union Local), who had 17, and freshman forward
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton), who had 10. Porter shot seven-of-13 from the field in the game, including three-of-seven from three-point range. Fuller also grabbed six rebounds and had three blocks in the victory.
The home team shot 47 percent from the field compared to Geneva's 42 percent. The Yellow Jackets shot 18-30 (60 percent) in the second half to help pull away from the Golden Tornadoes. Waynesburg has now won its last three conference games and four of its last six overall.
The Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 6, when second-place Washington & Jefferson travels to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Tipoff against the Presidents is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
