Jacket women tip off 2019

Waynesburg travels to W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Jan. 5) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team returned to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Saturday with a road trip to Washington & Jefferson. The Yellow Jackets fell 88-66 to the host Presidents.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair as the Yellow Jackets (3-10, 1-4) opened up a 7-6 lead following the first 3:39 of play. W&J (9-5, 5-1) answered with an 18-6 run that gave it a 24-13 lead with 1:34 left to play in the opening period. The Jackets were able to regain some of their lost momentum with a brief 8-1 surge that pulled the visitors to within four points of the lead (25-21).

After the home team opened the second with a two-point field goal, Waynesburg sophomore Elena McDermott (Slippery Rock, Pa. / Slippery Rock) answered with a three-pointer that made the score 27-24 Presidents.

Unfortunately, that's as close to completing the comeback as the Orange and Black was able to do, as W&J took a 46-38 lead into halftime. The Presidents slowly pulled away from the Yellow Jackets over the final two quarters, winning the third 23-17 and the fourth by a 19-11 difference.

Sophomore Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. / West Shamokin) led the way for Waynesburg with a team-high 14 points. Junior guard Erin Joyce (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bishop Canevin) knocked down four three-pointers on eight tries for 12 of her 13 points. Freshman forward Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) chipped in 13 points of her own on five-of-eight shooting over 24 minutes off the bench.

Senior point guard Monica Starre (Jewett, Ohio , Carrollton) chipped in eight points, a team-high seven rebound and a squad-best four assists.

Waynesburg returns to the court on Wednesday when it hosts Saint Vincent. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
