WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 26) – A gray, rainy day served as the backdrop for Saturday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup between Waynesburg and Saint Vincent at John F. Wiley Stadium. The Yellow Jackets struck first, but couldn't put the Bearcats away, as the visiting team picked up a late game-deciding touchdown in a 21-17 Waynesburg loss.
Each of Saturday's teams opened the game with punts on their first drives. The Yellow Jackets (1-7, 1-6) took possession of the football at their own 34-yard-line. After freshman running back
Justin Flack (Derry, Pa. / Derry) lost a yard on the play of the possession, he more than made up for it by breaking free for a 68-yard touchdown run, his longest carry as a Yellow Jacket.
Senior kicker
Mike Ryhal (Fredonia, Pa. / Reynolds) tacked on the extra point to give the Jackets a 7-0 first quarter advantage.
Saint Vincent (2-5, 2-4) tied the game at 7-7 in the second quarter, which was also the score when both squads broke for halftime. The contest remained deadlocked until late in the third quarter, when Ryhal drilled a 30-yard field goal with 1:26 remaining in the period.
After seeing the majority of the first 45 minutes being controlled by the two defenses, the fourth quarter was one filled with offense.
Saint Vincent took its first lead of the game 4:33 into the final period of play. Waynesburg fired back roughly six minutes later, when Flack pulled in his first receiving touchdown as a Jacket, this one from four years out, to complete a 13-play, 75-yard march to pay dirt that made the score 17-14.
Unfortunately, the Bearcats were able to put together a 75-yard drive of their own for what turned out to be the game-winning score with under a minute remaining in the game. The Jackets had one last shot at securing the victory, but an interception sealed the victory for the Bearcats.
Flack paced the Waynesburg offense with a team season-high 124 yards rushing on 24 carries. Senior
Chad Walker (Waldorf, Md. / Thomas Stone) chipped in 40 yards on 12 runs.
Sophomore linebacker
Bret Hicks (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) had his most productive day as a collegian by piling up a game-high 12 tackles, five of which were solo stops. Senior
Dan Verhovsek (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland) added 10 tackles. Senior defensive backs
Ty McEliece (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield) and
Brennan Sefick (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Catholic) both logged interceptions. Sefick's third interception has him tied for fourth in the PAC.
Waynesburg will have an extra seven days to prepare for its final home game of the season as it enters its bye week. The Yellow Jackets host 17
th-ranked Case Western Reserve on Saturday, Nov. 9, for senior day.
