Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer logs third-straight shutout

Waynesburg keeps playoff hopes alive with 1-0 victory over Geneva

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 29) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team ended the regular season on Tuesday night by hosting Geneva in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup. The Yellow Jackets continued to stay in the conversation for a conference playoff spot by downing the Golden Tornadoes 1-0.

With the win, Waynesburg (5-10-2, 3-3-2) ends the season with 11 points, which have the Yellow Jackets in a tie with Chatham for the fourth and final playoff spot. Chatham plays its final regular season game against Bethany on Saturday. A Cougar win eliminates Waynesburg. Geneva (8-8, 3-4) wraps up its season on Saturday with a game against Westminster, which is the number-one team in the league. The GT's must defeat the Titans to have a shot at the postseason.

Waynesburg ends its schedule on a season-high three-straight victories. All three wins were shutouts.

The team's most recent victory was very much in doubt with the score tied 0-0 through halftime and deep into the second half. However, the Jackets caught a huge break in the 82nd minute, when senior Teagan Jenner (Berlin, Pa. / Berlin Brothersvalley) was fouled inside the 18-yard box, giving the veteran a penalty kick. Jenner came through in what could be the most important attempt of the season with the night's only point.

Geneva battled to the end and put a pair of shots on goal over the final 6:20. Freshman Autumn Blair (Penn Hills, Pa. / Penn Hills) was up to the challenge, as she turned aside both attempts to preserve the victory.

Blair ended the night with four saves to log her third shutout of the campaign. Three of those saves came in the second half.

Both teams dominated one half of the game in terms of total shots. Waynesburg owned the opening 45 minutes by outshooting Geneva 11-4. The Golden Tornadoes bounced back by posting 10 shots in period number two, while the Jackets managed just four total shots.

Waynesburg must now wait and see how the rest of this week plays out to see if they will qualify for the postseason.
