PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Dec. 7) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team traveled north to Pittsburgh for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Chatham. It was a rough day on the court for the Yellow Jackets, who never led in a 78-56 loss to the Cougars.
Waynesburg's (0-7, 0-2) top three scorers came off the bench, with sophomore
Isaiah Alonzo (Chandler, Ariz. / Tri-City Christian Academy) leading the charge with a team-high 15 points over 17 minutes. He collected 11 of those points on 13 free throws and tied for the team lead with six rebounds.
Senior
Sam Heeter (New Bethlehem / Redbank Valley) and freshman
Briston Bennett (Mt. Morris, Pa. / Trinity Christian) chipped in nine points each on the day. Senior
Brennan Smith (New Cumberland, W.Va. / Oak Glen) led the starting five with eight points and a game-high three assists.
After falling behind 49-25 at halftime, the Jackets outscored Chatham (7-2, 2-0) 31-29 in the second half. As they have done all season, Waynesburg was more than productive at the free throw line, where it connected on 21-of-29 attempts. However, the game was ultimately decided from long range. The Jackets hit on just three-of-12 three-point range, while the Cougars nailed down 12-of-29 treys.
Waynesburg is off next week for final exams, before returning to PAC play on Monday, Nov. 16, with a home game against Westminster. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
