Jacket women close out regular season

Huge fourth quarter leads Bethany past Waynesburg

BETHANY, W.Va. (Feb. 16) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team wrapped up the 2018-19 regular season on Saturday with a road trip to Bethany. The Yellow Jackets led going into the fourth quarter, but a monster final 10 minutes from the home team resulted in an 88-76 Bison victory.

With the loss, Waynesburg (8-17, 6-10) ends the year tied for sixth place. However, Westminster grabs the number-six spot by way of a tiebreaker, forcing Waynesburg into seventh place and a road playoff game on Monday. The victory moved Bethany (13-12, 8-8) into a tie for fourth with Chatham. The Cougars own the tiebreaker in that scenario, meaning the Bison will host a first-round game on Monday.

Things started well for the visiting team, which tallied the first four points of the day. After Bethany tied the score, senior point guard Monica Starre (Jewett, Ohio / Carrolton) and sophomore guard Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. / West Shamokin) reestablished a four-point lead for the Orange and Black with back-to-back field goals.

A response of nine-straight points by Bethany put the Green and White ahead 13-8. The home team's lead grew to nine, before a three pointer from freshman guard Haley Porter (Belmont, Ohio / Union Local) brought about the final score of the quarter, 17-11.

The home team led throughout the majority of quarter number two before the Jackets made their move in the final minute-plus of play. A three-pointer from freshman guard Kacey Kastroll (South Park, Pa. / South Park) put her team up 30-29. After the Bison answered with a trey of their own, Kastroll canned another from down town to restore the one-point edge. Bethany retaliated once again, but Kastroll made it three-straight from beyond the arc to give Waynesburg a 36-35 halftime edge.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with Waynesburg coming out on top with a 57-54 advantage going into the fourth period. Unfortunately for the Jackets, the Bison opened the quarter on a 12-0 and never looked back as they exploded for 34 points to grab the victory.

Waynesburg was paced by Orlosky, who capped an outstanding first full regular season as a starter with a game-high 27 points, 13 of which came at the free throw line. She attempted 17 of her team's 19 foul shots. Orlosky just missed out on what would have been a fifth double-double this season after grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out team-best four assists.

Freshman center Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) contributed 12 points and eight rebounds to the cause, while Starre, like Orlosky came up just short of a double-double with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Kastroll's three-point outburst produced most of her 13 points off the bench.

Waynesburg tips off its run at a PAC title on Monday at Westminster. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
