WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 12) – The Waynesburg University baseball team opened the home portion of its schedule today under sunny skies. The Yellow Jackets hosted Allegheny and were unable to come away with a victory during the doubleheader.
Waynesburg (6-6) fell behind early and never recovered during a 9-3 loss in the opener. Allegheny (2-5) built a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third, where senior third baseman
Tyler Reis (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn Hills) teed off on his first homerun of the season.
The Jackets cut their deficit down to 7-3 in the bottom of the fifth when senior centerfielder
Mitch Nordstrom (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) recorded a two-run double that made the score 7-3. The Gators closed out the contest with a run in the sixth and a final one in the seventh.
Sophomore
Tyler Srbinovich (Warren, Ohio / Niles McKinley) got the start and suffered the loss on the mound after allowing seven runs over 2.1 innings. Senior
Brandon Lawless (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) gave his team a solid 3.2 innings of the bump, giving up a run on four hits. Sophomore
Carter Uzzell (Fairfax, Va. / Bishop O'Connell) closed out the early contest.
Waynesburg got off to a better start in game two, which saw the home team fall behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning. The Jackets grabbed their first lead of the day in the bottom of the frame. Nordstrom reached base on a run-scoring error before sophomore designated hitter
Chris Lee (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) gave his team a 2-1 edge with an RBI single.
Unfortunately, Allegheny responded by scoring the next four runs to take a 5-2 lead heading into the fifth inning. The Yellow Jackets scored the days' final run in the bottom of the fifth when freshman catcher
Tyler Woodrow (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine-Richland) drove in Nordstrom with an RBI single.
Defensive miscues hurt Waynesburg's chances at victory as they led to three unearned runs. Senior lefty
Ty Wickline (Clarksburg, W.Va. / Liberty) racked up six innings of work on the mound during which he gave up five runs, only two of which were earned, on seven hits and three walks.
Reis and Nordstrom paced the Jacket hitters by gathering four hits each on the day, with Reis hitting for the cycle over the twin bill. The former scored a game-high three runs, while the latter drove in a squad-best three runs.
Waynesburg is off until Wednesday, March 20, when it hosts Penn State Behrend for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
