Baseball sweeps Hilbert

Waynesburg bats lead the way in taking two from Hawks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 7) – The Waynesburg University baseball team won its second and third-straight games of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets swept both ends of its doubleheader with Hilbert to improve to 4-2 on the season.

The games were originally scheduled to be played on Tuesday, but were delayed by rain.

After falling behind 4-2 after two inning of play in game one, the Jackets roared back with three runs in the third, a whopping eight in the fourth and three more tallies in the fifth. Hilbert (2-5) managed a run in the seventh, but that was as far as its comeback came to fruition.

Junior catcher John Przbylinski (Connellsville, Pa. / Connellsville) continued a hot start to his season by going three-for-three at the plate with two walks, two runs scored and two RBI. He leads the team with eight RBI and is tied for the top spot with eight hits.

Freshman designated hitter Tyler Woodrow (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine-Richland) was a force at the dish. Not only did he launch his first collegiate homerun, a three-run shot in the fourth, but he plated a contest-best five scores in the opener.

Senior third baseman Tyler Reis (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn Hills) made the most of a one-for-two showing at the dish with a walk by scoring a game-high three times. Five other Waynesburg players scored two times each.

Waynesburg used four pitchers to secure the victory. Sophomore Tyler Srbinovich (Warren, Ohio / Niles McKinley) started and worked the first two-thirds of an inning. Sophomore Zach Straub (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) logged 2.2 innings of the mound before turning the ball over to senior Nate Gearhart (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon). Gearhart struck out three of the four batters he retired to pick up the win in relief. Freshman Michael Labbett (Carnegie, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) gave up the game's final run over two innings of work.

Game two saw Waynesburg follow a scoreless first inning with a three spot in the top of the second. Senior shortstop Alec Fantaskey (Williamsport, Pa. / Williamsport) and senior centerfielder Mitch Nordstrom (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) drove in runs, while freshman catcher Tyler Woodrow (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine-Richland) scampered home on a wild pitch.

Hilbert responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame to cut its deficit to 3-1. However, Waynesburg made sure the comeback wasn't going to come to fruition thanks to a run in the third, two in the fourth and one more tally in the sixth.

Woodrow paced the offense by going two-for-three with a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Fantaskey had one of his best games as a Jacket after reaching base four times on two walks and two singles.

Senior Brandon Lawless (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) got the start on the mound and worked six strong frames. He allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits and two walks. The veteran racked up eight strikeouts in the victory. Senior Colton Uzzell (Fairfax, Va. / Bishop O'Connell) closed out the victory with a perfect seventh frame.
