Softball hosts NAIA member Carlow

Yellow Jackets drop both ends of non-PAC doubleheader

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 16) – The Waynesburg University softball team welcomed NAIA member Carlow to town on Tuesday for a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. The visiting Celtics swept the twin bill by the final scores of 8-1 and 5-3.

Things started well for the Yellow Jackets (6-22). Freshman shortstop Megan Walker (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) picked up her first of two hits in the opener to drive in junior leftfielder Taylor Staley (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) with the day's first run in the bottom of the second innings.

Unfortunately, Waynesburg's lead only lasted until the top of the third, when Carlow (18-13) tied things up at 1-1. The score stayed knotted up until the fifth, when the Celtics plated three to put the game out of reach. The visitors added four more tallies in the top of the seventh to bring about the final score.

Sophomore Emma Kubalak (Spring Mills, Pa. / Penns Valley) suffered the loss after working 6.2 innings in the circle. Senior righty Courtney Messenger (East Liverpool, Ohio / Beaver Local) recorded the final out of the early contest.

Messenger proceeded to take the ball for game two and shut Carlow out for six of the seven innings she worked in the circle. Unfortunately, the Celtics racked up five runs in the third to take the win.

The Jackets attempted to come back in the bottom of the sixth inning by plating three runs, one of which came on an RBI single by sophomore right fielder Marlee Ott (Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier). The home team brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but couldn't quite complete the comeback.

Outside of her six-hit, third inning, Messenger enjoyed plenty of success in the circle. She yielded just two hits over the other six innings of the contest.

Waynesburg returns to PAC competition on Monday, April 22, with a home doubleheader against Geneva. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
