WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 25) – The Waynesburg University baseball team hosted Grove City on Wednesday for a nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup with the Wolverines. The Yellow Jackets came up short of victory in a 6-1 contest.
Waynesburg (17-15, 11-7) suffered the loss despite a huge day at the plate from junior second baseman
Justin Buberl (Westminster, Md. / Westminster). Buberl went four-for-four with his second homerun of the season, a solo shot that broke up a potential shutout in the bottom of the eighth inning. He tallied half of his team's eight total hits on the day.
Grove City (22-11, 13-5) tallied a run in the first, one in the third, two in the fourth and two more in the sixth for its half-dozen runs.
Junior
Mason Miller (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) had an uncharacteristically challenging day on the mound en route to his second loss of the season (6-2). He allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on three hits and four walks over three innings. He logged three strikeouts on the day.
Miller was the first of five Jacket pitchers to hit the field on the afternoon. The final two hurlers to see action, senior
Nate Gearhart (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon) and freshman Core Fischer (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bethel Park) logged a combined three scoreless innings to close out the setback.
The Jackets begin a critical six-game stretch run to the 2019 season on Saturday, April 27, with a road doubleheader at Saint Vincent. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. A nine-inning home game against the Bearcats was scheduled to be played in Waynesburg on Friday. However, a poor forecast has moved the meeting of league rivals to Sunday at 4 p.m.
