BETHANY, W.Va. (April 25) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team traveled to Bethany on Wednesday for the quarterfinal round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tournament. The two squads battled over a combined nine flights and by the time the final point was scored, the Yellow Jackets were on the wrong end of a heart-breaking 5-4 final score.
The day's final outcome could have ultimately been decided at first doubles. Waynesburg's (8-6) senior duo of
Jonah Cooper (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Beaver County Christian) and
Josh Denham (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) squared off with the opposition from the Bison (11-5) in a tightly contested battle at the flight. Unfortunately, they were unable to duplicate an 8-6 victory that came in the two team's regular season match. Cooper and Denham fell 8-5 in their final collegiate match as a twosome.
The Jackets logged their only doubles win at the number-two spot, where freshmen
Conor Cassidy (Huntingtown, Md. / Huntingtown) and
Joe English (Smithfield, Pa. / Homeschooled) picked up a decisive 8-2 triumph.
The two teams split the six singles flight and Cooper led things off with an outstanding conclusion to his collegiate career. The four-year standout defeated Bethany's Chris Ray for a second time this season with a thrilling three-set victory on Wednesday.
English completed a 2-0 day with a straight-set win at third singles. Junior
Tanner McKnight (Grove City, Pa. / Grove City) gutted out a 6-2, 5-7, 10-6 victory at sixth singles.
While Waynesburg's season came to an end, Bethany moves on to tomorrow's semifinal round where it faces top-seeded Washington & Jefferson.
