BETHANY, W.Va. (April 27) – The Waynesburg University softball team wrapped up its 2019 season on Saturday with a road trip to Bethany. The Yellow Jackets came up short of victory in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) twin bill.
The Bison (10-20, 7-7) took game one 8-0 in six innings and completed the sweep with a 9-5 triumph in the late contest.
A rough first inning and some defensive struggles doomed Waynesburg (8-26, 4-12) in the opener. The Bison kicked off the contest with a five-run first inning and never looked back. Six of the Green and White's tallies were of the unearned variety.
Senior
Courtney Messenger (East Liverpool, Ohio / Beaver Local) took the loss in the circle.
Waynesburg opened game two on a high note when sophomore catcher
Christina Baker (Keedysville, Md. / Boonsboro) singled in senior leftfielder Cat Allstat (Indianapolis, Ind. / Roncalli) in the top of the first inning.
After Bethany took a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the frame, Baker struck again, this time plating junior
Rachel Skon (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brashear), who moved from her usual spot behind the plate to first base. Messenger, who moved from the circle to second base, got a rare chance to swing the bat and took advantage with a two-run single.
After the Bison retied the score 4-4 in the third, the lead swung back to Waynesburg's side of the field, when Skon singled home senior centerfielder
Courtney Syfert (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland). Unfortunately, the Bison posted another five-run inning, this one coming in the fifth.
Sophomore
Emma Kubalak (Spring Mills, Pa. / Penns Valley) was the pitcher of record in game two.
The Jacket offense took a noticeable step forward, going from one hit in the opener, to nine in the late contest. Skon, Lawrence and Baker recorded a pair of knocks each in the season finale.
