LATROBE, Pa. (April 6) – The Waynesburg University softball team traveled to Saint Vincent on Saturday for a doubleheader against the top team in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). The Yellow Jackets proved they could hang with the top team in the league, but were unable to come away with a victory against the Bearcats.

Waynesburg (6-16, 2-4) trailed 2-0 after four innings in the opener, but a two-run infield single by senior leftfielder
Cat Allstatt (Indianapolis, Ind. / Roncalli) tied the game in the top of the fifth. Unfortunately, Saint Vincent (18-6, 6-0) answered with four runs in the fifth and another in the sixth en route to picking up the 7-3 win.

Senior
Courtney Messenger (East Liverpool, Ohio / Beaver Local) took the loss in the circle. She gave up five earned runs on 12 hits and a walk over a six-inning complete game. Messenger registered two strikeouts in the early contest.

Game two, which SVC took 7-5, saw the host team jump out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. Waynesburg had no intentions of giving up, however, as it answered with a four-spot in the top of the fourth.

Senior first baseman
Alex Lawrence (Bridgeville, Pa. / Chartiers Valley), sophomore designated player
Tara Staley (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) and junior outfielder
Taylor Staley (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) all recorded RBI base hits in the inning. The Jackets final run of the frame came off a Bearcat error.

Saint Vincent scored its final two runs of the day in the fifth. The Jackets tried to rally in the top of the seventh when they loaded the bases with one out.
Tara Staley grounded out to score junior infielder
Ashley Dubovich (New Salem, Pa. / Albert Gallatin) and cut the deficit to 7-5. Unfortunately, Waynesburg couldn't come up with one last base hit to force a bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore
Emma Kubalak (Spring Mills, Pa. / Penns Valley) took the pitching loss after giving up five runs, only two of which were earned, over two innings of work. Messenger pitched the final four frames and yielded a pair of scores.

Freshman infielder
Megan Walker (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) had a big day at the plate, going four-for-six with a run scored. Junior catcher
Rachel Skon (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brashear) added four hits, one of which was a double, in seven at-bats with an RBI and a run scored.

Waynesburg is back in action on Tuesday, April 9, with a road PAC doubleheader at Chatham. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
