WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 23) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team had a very busy weekend, hosting a pair of home matches against non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opposition. The Yellow Jackets fought hard, but came up short against Mt. Aloysius and Muskingum on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Waynesburg (1-4) first dropped a 6-3 contest to the Mounties (4-3). The final result was ultimately decided at second doubles and third singles, where the visiting team won a pair of tight matches.
Saturday was another hard-fought contest. The Jackets swept the three doubles flights with the Muskies (1-1), but it wasn't enough, as the visitors pulled out a 5-4 victory. Three of the singles contests went to three sets, with Muskingum winning two of them.
Sophomore
Kyleigh Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin), senior
Sierra Stevens (Bellwood, Pa. / Bellwood-Antis) and freshman
Hayley Sweeney (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland) all logged singles victories on the weekend.
Four different pairs won in doubles competition for the Yellow Jackets, including senior
Noelle Hughes (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Blackhawk), who went 2-0. She teamed with Sweeney for one victory and junior
Katie Dollard (Bradfordwoods, Pa. / North Allegheny) for another.
Schmidt joined up with senior
Lauren Wadsworth (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) for a victory at first doubles. The freshman duo of freshman
Katie Fresch (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland) and
Madison Trent (Shanksville, Pa. / Shanksville-Stony Creek) also celebrated a win at the number-three spot.
