Women's soccer opens PAC play

Jackets play to 2OT draw at Chatham

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Sept. 28) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Saturday with a road trip to Chatham. The Yellow Jackets and Cougars battled for 110 minutes, but that still wasn't enough time to determine a winner as the two squads played a 2-2 draw.

The tie ended a four-game losing streak for the Jackets (2-7-1, 0-0-1) and snapped a three-game skid against the Cougars (3-3-3, 0-0-1). A large portion of the credit for the game's outcome is due to sophomore goalkeeper Emma Burns (Avella, Pa. / Weirton Madonna), who piled up a personal collegiate-best 13 saves while facing a barrage of 20 total shots from Chatham.

Things didn't start well for Burns and her teammates, as the Cougars scored on the game's first shot, which came just 4:09 into the contest. However, the Jackets quickly turned things around to tie the contest at 1-1 in seventh minute. Sophomore Leesha Wagner (Lower Burrell, Pa. / Burrell) connected on her team-high fourth goal of the campaign. She was set up by senior teammate Teagan Jenner (Berlin, Pa. / Berlin Brothersvalley), giving her a squad-best four assists in 2019. That total is also tied for the top spot in the PAC.

The Jackets managed to stay tied while fighting off the Chatham barrage and grabbed their first lead early in the 63rd minute. Sophomore Hayley Frizzell (Finleyville, Pa. / Ringgold) did the honors with her first goal of the season, an unassisted tally.

Unfortunately, the Cougars responded 5:22 later to tie the score up at 2-2. Waynesburg minimized the second-half damage, despite being outshot by a 9-4 margin. The Orange and Black kept up its scrappy defensive efforts, as Chatham attempted a combined four shots in the two overtime periods and kept the Jackets from getting off any shots of their own.

The Yellow Jackets return to John F. Wiley Stadium on Friday for a showdown with perennial PAC power Grove City. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
