Women's basketball hosts W&J

Yellow Jackets play well, but big third-quarter run leads to win for the Presidents

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 11) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted Washington & Jefferson on Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown. The Yellow Jackets battled the Presidents from opening tipoff to final whistle. Unfortunately, a big third-quarter run by the visitors proved to be the difference in a 95-84 loss for the host squad.

Waynesburg (2-12, 1-4) got off to a strong start offensively and rode it to a 25-22 lead at the end of the first quarter. W&J (9-5, 4-2) cut its deficit down to two points at halftime after winning the second period 23-22. By the time the two teams broke for their respective locker rooms, The Orange and Black was clinging to a 47-45 edge.

With 7:52 remaining in the third quarter, the score was tied at 51-51. Over the next 6:30, the Presidents put together a 23-10 run that put them ahead 74-61. Freshman guard Anika Dansby (Massilon, Ohio / Washington) strung together the final four points of the period to pull her team to within nine points of tying the score at 74-65.

Waynesburg managed to pull within five points of the Presidents on two different occasions in the final 10 minutes of play. One of those situations came with 16 seconds left on the game clock. Unfortunately, W&J connected on six-straight free throw tries to lock down the victory.

The Jackets were led by an offensive attack that featured four double-digit scorers. Sophomore center Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) led the quartet with a team-high 19 points. She added seven rebounds to a productive day's work.

Junior Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. / West Shamokin) logged her second double-double in three games on 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Orlosky added two assists, a block and three steals to a busy 37 minutes on the court.

Senior Alli Delaney (Belmont, Ohio / Union Local) knocked down four-of- six three-pointers to fuel a 15-point output. She also tied for the team lead with four assists. Sophomore guard Kacey Kastroll (South Park, Pa. / South Park) tallied 11 points to complete the double-digit foursome.

A major deciding factor in the win was W&J's decided advantage at the free throw line. The Presidents connected on 28-of-35 attempts from the stripe, while Waynesburg was successful on an efficient 16-of-19 foul shots.

The Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 16, when they travel to Saint Vincent. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
