NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Feb. 1) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team faced Westminster in a road Presidents' Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets held a lead early in the first half, but could not hold on as they dropped a 73-58 decision to the Titans.
Despite the loss, Waynesburg (4-16, 4-7) is still in a favorable position for the PAC postseason with five conference games remaining on the schedule.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 9-6 lead with 14:32 left in the first half. The Titans (12-8, 7-4) took the lead back shortly after, but senior guard
Cam Auld (North Huntingdon, Pa. / Norwin) gave Waynesburg a one-point advantage (15-14) on a three-pointer with just under seven minutes remaining in the first 20 minutes. Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, that was their final lead of the night.
By the end of the first half, Waynesburg found itself in a 29-23 hole.
Westminster continued to build on its lead in the opening minutes of the second half. The Titans led Waynesburg by as many as 15 points with 13:11 left to play in regulation, but Waynesburg cut the deficit back to single digits (50-43) with a 10-3 run with just over eight minutes showing on the clock.
The Yellow Jackets were unable to reduce the Titan advantage any further, however, as Westminster worked its way to a 73-58 final.
Senior forward
Brennan Smith (New Cumberland, W.Va. / Oak Glen) led Waynesburg in scoring with 17 points on six-of-eight shooting from the field, including three-of-four from three-point range. Sophomore forward
Isaiah Alonzo (Chandler, Ariz. / Tri-City Christian Academy) chipped in 15 points and 11 rebounds for a double double, while Auld added eight points and seven rebounds to the cause.
Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 5, when it hosts Geneva at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse for a PAC game. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
