WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 2) – The Waynesburg University football team hosted Grove City on Saturday for its 2021 homecoming game. Unfortunately, the visiting Wolverines wound up being the team doing the celebrating after they logged a 38-0 win over the Yellow Jackets.
Grove City (4-1, 3-1) scored the eventual game-winning points on a field goal that capped the Wolverines' first drive of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest. Grove City gained possession after a turnover ended Waynesburg's (1-4, 1-3) first turn with the football.
The visitors eventually took a 24-0 lead into halftime. They closed out the win with one touchdown in the third quarter and another in the fourth.
A slew of newcomers led Waynesburg on the warm, sunny afternoon. Freshman
James Davis (Kersey, Pa. / Saint Mary's) paced the Jacket defense with a team-high 14 tackles that included a game-best eight solo stops. Freshman defensive back
Brandon Tyson (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Frederick Douglass) pulled in Waynesburg's first interception of the season), while also tallying five total tackles.
Freshman
Samuel Hamilton (Bowie, Md. / Charles Herbert Flowers) notched his squad-leading third sack of the season. He also posted two tackles for loss, giving him a Jacket-high five for the year.
Despite playing with a heavily casted left hand, freshman wide receiver
Dakota Romantino (Charleroi, Pa. / Charleroi) still managed to set team highs in receptions (six) and receiving yards (63). Junior running back
Justin Flack (Derry, Pa. / Derry) rushed for 59 yards on 15 carries.
Waynesburg is off until Oct. 16, as it heads into its bye week. The Yellow Jackets will travel to Westminster in two weeks for a PAC showdown.
