WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 5) - The Waynesburg University women's tennis team hosted Geneva for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets battled the Golden Tornadoes over nine flights, but came up just short in a 5-4 match.Â
Waynesburg (0-9, 0-6) and Geneva (2-6, 1-6) saw their match decided at first doubles, where the two squads duked it out in a tight contest. Senior
Kyleigh Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) and junior
Hayley Sweeney (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland) went point-for-point and game-for-game in a match that went to tie-breaker. Unfortunately for the host team, the Golden Tornadoes came out on top by the final of 8-7 (7-3).Â
The final two doubles contests were split giving Geneva a 2-1 edge heading into singles competition.Â
Schmidt and Sweeney both found themselves in nail-biting showdowns at first and second doubles, respectively. Schmidt managed to pull out a 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 victory, while Sweeney came back to record a 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 triumph.Â
The Jackets wrap up the regular season tomrrow with a road trip to PAC rival Thiel. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
