WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 10) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team opened the dual portion of its 2021-22 schedule on Wednesday by hosting NCAA Division II opponent Shippensburg. Both squads were dealing with injuries, early season weight management and other issues that led to three forfeits and a no-match. Despite those hardships, the match concluded in thrilling fashion, as the Raiders pulled out a 27-23 win.
 
The Raiders (1-1) opened up a 6-0 lead with a pin at 125 pounds. However, Waynesburg senior Dylan Winters (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) got his team on the board with a 19-4 (7:00) technical fall at 133 pounds that made the score 6-5.
 
The two squads traded forfeits at 141 and 149 pounds, before a Shippensburg pin at 157 gave the visitors an 18-11 advantage. That lead grew to 24-11 with a fall at 165. Following a forfeit to Waynesburg's Kyle Hinerman at 174 and no match at 184, the Raiders led 24-17 with just two weights left.
 
Knowing his team needed bonus points, junior Luke LaVanway (Monroe, Mich. / Mason) stepped to the mat at 197 pounds. Not only did LaVanway get the necessary bonus points, but he logged Waynesburg's only pin of the night by sticking his opponent in 3:14 and making the score 24-23.
 
The final result of the mat came down to the heavyweight tilt. First-year sophomore Trent Patrick (Delmont, Pa. / Greensburg Salem) battled his opponent at 285, but a takedown for the visitors proved to be the difference in a 3-2 win in the bout and a 27-23 triumph in the match.
 
Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 13, when it competes in the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. Start time is scheduled for 9:45 a.m.
