WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 12) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team hit the mats for the first time since Feb. 29, 2020, on Friday evening, when it hosted Garrett (Md.) College. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an 18-3 lead after six weights and went on to pick up a 24-12 victory.
Waynesburg (1-0) opened the contest with a 7-5 victory (SV1) victory at 125 pounds courtesy of sophomore
Noah Grossnickle (Myersville, Md. / Middletown). Another sophomore,
Harley Constable (Smithfield, Pa. / Albert Gallatin) grabbed a decision of his own by gutting out a 4-2 victory at 133 pounds.
The first of several Waynesburg newcomers came to the mat at 141 pounds and freshman
Alex Coppolo (Bellefonte, Pa. / Bellefonte) looked great in his collegiate debut with a pin in 4:44. With the Jackets ahead 12-0, Garrett (0-1) earned a decision win at 149 pounds, but the home team bounced back with another decision, this one coming at 157 pounds. Sophomore
Colby Morris (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) earned a 6-2 win to put the home team up 15-3.
Another Jacket newcomer hit the mat at 165 pounds. Freshman
Trevor Verkleeren (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield) turned around an early deficit and scored an 8-2 decisions to grow the Jacket advantage to a match-high 15 points (18-3).
Back-to-back wins for Garrett made the score 18-12. However, Waynesburg closed out the victory with back-to-back decisions. Sophomore
Luke Lavanway (Monroe, Mich. / Mason) sealed the victory with a 9-6 win at 197 pounds. Sophomore heavyweight
Rocky McGeary (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) capped the night with a 3-1 win.
McGeary's night wasn't finished, as he also wrestled an extra match following the conclusion of the dual. He ended the night with a fall in 4:08.
