GROVE CITY, Pa. (March 10) – The Waynesburg University baseball team opened its 2020-21 season on Wednesday with an afternoon doubleheader at Grove City. The Yellow Jackets fell in both ends of the twin-bill by the final scores of 2-1 and 13-3.
Hits were hard to come by in the opener, as the two teams combined for just nine knocks. Waynesburg (0-2) had four of them, including a double by freshman
Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough). Bell eventually came around to score after the two-bagger thanks to an error and a wild pitch.
The Jackets got some stellar early-season pitching out of junior
Cody Ray (St. Clairsville, Ohio / Union Local) and senior
Zach Straub (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park). Ray started and allowed two runs on four hits over 4.1 innings. He piled up five strikeouts in his first start of the season. Straub closed the day by working the final 1.2 frames, over which he gave up a single hit, no runs, no walks and recorded three strikeouts.
Four Jackets recorded one hit each in the opener.
Grove City (2-0) roared out to a 4-0 lead after two innings of the late contest. The Orange and Black managed to cut its deficit in half with a two-spot in the top of the fifth. Senior
Tyler Srbinovich (Warren, Ohio / Niles McKinley) singled home freshman
Nolan Vertullo (Pittsburgh, Pa. / South Fayette) to break up the shutout, before Bell connected on a sacrifice fly to centerfield that allowed junior
Ty Kildow (Bethesda, Ohio / Union Local) to sprint home and make the score 4-2.
Unfortunately, the Wolverines responded in a big way with four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth that put the home team ahead 12-2. Waynesburg posted its final tally of the day when junior
Nolan Porterfield (Connellsville, Pa. / Connellsville) recorded his first RBI of the year on a fielder's choice play. Senior
Ryan Mills (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) crossed home plate on the play. Grove City closed the scoring with a run in the eighth.
Mills paced the Orange and Black by going two-for-four with a pair of doubles in game two. Bell added two more hits to his day.
Five different Jackets saw time on the mound in game two. Junior
Joe Sabolek (Lynnwood-Pricedale, Pa. / Belle Vernon) started and took the loss after yielding eight runs, only four of which were earned on seven hits and five walks. Sabolek punched up four opposing hitters on the day.
The same two teams are scheduled to meet up on Saturday in Waynesburg for another doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
