LATROBE, Pa. (March 15) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team traveled to Saint Vincent to face the Bearcats in the quarterfinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) championship tournament. The seventh-seeded Yellow Jackets battled through a tightly-contested first half, but the top-seeded Bearcats pulled away in the final two quarters for an 87-59 win.
Waynesburg (3-8) came roaring out of the gate and jumped out to a 7-0 advantage following four points by senior
Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. / West Shamokin) and a three-pointer by freshman
Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside). The two teams traded the lead back-and-forth throughout the majority of the opening period, with the Orange and Black taking its final advantage of the opening quarter with 3:27 showing on the clock. Unfortunately, that was the Jackets' final lead of the contest.
The Orange and Black didn't go down without a fight and trailed by just seven (25-18) at the end of the first quarter and kept the deficit the same (42-35) by the time the two teams broke for halftime. Momentum swung firmly into the home team's (8-0) side in the third period. Following a three-pointer by freshman guard
Avery Robinson (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) that made the score 50-46, Saint Vincent ripped off a 13-2 run to end the third and give the eventual victors a 63-48 advantage.
The Bearcats closed out the victory by winning the fourth quarter 24-11.
Orlosky wrapped up a spectacular Yellow Jacket career with team highs in points (18) and rebounds (13) for her seventh double-double of the year. She also tied for the game high with five assists. She ends her 2020-21 season ranked fifth in the conference in scoring, first in rebounding, fifth in blocks and first in minutes played.
Wolf, Robinson and junior
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) contributed 10 points each on the night. First-year junior
Abigail Green (Forestville, Pa. / Portersville Christian School) grabbed eight boards.
Though the graduation of Orlosky and fellow senior
Elena McDermott (Slippery Rock, Pa. / Slippery Rock) will be difficult, the rest of the Jacket roster is expected to be back next season.
