WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 27) – Saturday's softball doubleheader between Waynesburg and Washington & Jefferson featured plenty of offensive fireworks between the visiting Yellow Jackets and the homestanding Presidents. Waynesburg struck early and often in the opener for a 14-0 win. Game two saw the Presidents put up two touchdowns and two extra points in a 14-6 victory for the Red and Black.
Both games ended in the fifth inning.
Waynesburg (8-8) wasted little time in taking control of the opener thanks to an eight-run first inning that saw 13 Jacket hitters come to the plate. Freshman
Ella Brookman (Washington, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) and sophomore
Lauren Lober (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) both posted two-run singles to drive in half of the inning's runs.
Senior
Kayla Alderson (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) added some flash to Waynesburg's offensive day with a solo homerun in the second inning that made the score 9-0 Jackets. Alderson struck again in the fifth with a two-run double. That two-bagger highlighted a five-run frame that closed the scoring for the opener.
No one enjoyed Waynesburg's offensive explosion more than senior
Emma Kubalak (Spring Mills, Pa. / Penns Valley), who cruised to a shutout win in the circle. The veteran hurler logged the complete-game shutout after giving up just four singles and two walks over five frames.
The Jacket offense kept rolling into game two. Waynesburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a two-run error and an RBI groundout by freshman
Emma Bliss (Uniontown, Pa. / Laurel Highlands).
Unlike the first game, however, WJ had an answer for the Jackets' challenge and put up four runs in the bottom of the frame to take its first lead of the afternoon. Waynesburg tied the game in the top of the second when Lober teed off on a one-run homer that made the score 4-4.
Unfortunately for the Jackets, W&J pushed five runs across home plate in the second and never looked back as it salvaged a split. Alderson completed a very productive day at the plate with a two-run single in the third.
Defensive hiccups seriously hindered the Jackets' attempt at a sweep. Six errors played a role in nine unearned runs given up by the visiting team. Brookman, who got the pitching start in game two, was in the circle for four of those unearned runs and suffered the loss.
Not surprisingly, there were some truly notable performances at the plate for the Jackets. Hunter went five-for-six at the dish with two RBI's and three runs scored. She slugged 1.000 on the day and went two-for-two in stolen base attempts.
Alderson logged a team-high five RBI's in the split and scored three times while going three-for-six with a double and a homer. She boasted a 1.167 slugging percentage.
The Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, March 30, when they host Franciscan for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
