WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 7) – The Waynesburg University softball team hosted Thiel for its second doubleheader in as many days. It was a wild 12 innings, but by the time the dust settled, the Yellow Jackets picked up a pair of victories over the Tomcats.
Waynesburg (3-1) built up a 7-2 lead in game one, and held on for a 7-5 victory. Game two followed a similar script, as the Jackets rolled out to a 14-0 advantage after three innings. Thiel (0-2) exploded for a nine-spot in the top of the fourth, but that was all the offense the visitors could muster in the late contest. Waynesburg rallied for the final three scores of the day and picked up a 17-9 victory in the fifth inning.
The Jacket bats were on fire from the get-go and produced 29 hits over the sweep. There were a slew of impressive offense performances on the day, but few opened as many eyes as the one put by sophomore
Reghan Benschoter (Newark, Ohio / Granville) in game two.
Benschoter erupted for four hits in four at-bats with three runs scored and a whopping seven RBI, while hitting for the cycle. Sophomore
Brin Hunter (West Alexander, Pa. / McGuffey) totaled four hits in eight at-bats over the sweep. Freshman
Ella Brookman (Washington, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) did the same with two triples.
Freshman
Kara May (Indian Head, Pa. / Connellsville) started in the circle and picked up her first collegiate pitching victory after allowing five runs, four of which were earned, on 10 hits and three walks. Brookman stepped into the circle and got the final out of the game for her first save of the season.
Senior
Emma Kubalak (Spring Mills, Pa. / Penns Valley) notched her first pitching victory in game two after allowing nine runs, only four of which were earned, on seven hits. Kubalak didn't yield a walk and rang up six strikeouts in the late contest. Freshman
Kayla Gratton (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) worked 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. She gave up three hits with no walks and chalked up two strikeouts.
Waynesburg plays its first road games on Tuesday, when it heads to Grove City for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
