WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 10) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled to Washington & Jefferson Saturday afternoon for a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader. Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, the Presidents scored early and often in both games, winning by scores of 11-1 and 21-4, respectively.
In game one, W&J (18-0, 14-0), which is currently ranked 17
th in the country, scored one run in the first, two in the second and four in the third to build up a 7-0 lead over Waynesburg (4-10, 2-9). The Presidents added one more in the fourth and three in the sixth to take an 11-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets finally strung some big hits together in the top of the seventh, as senior designated hitter
Chris Lee (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) led off the inning with a double. Two batters later, sophomore left fielder
Joe Kraft (Munhall, Pa. / Steel Valley) traded places with Lee on a double of his own to push across the team's lone run of the contest.
Six different Waynesburg batters recorded hits in the contest, with Kraft leading the way with a two-for-three effort. Senior right fielder
Brandon Durbin (Cresson, Pa. / Bishop Carroll) also doubled.
Game two quickly got away from the Jackets, as the Presidents plated eight runs in the opening inning. W&J added one in the second, three in the third, and one more in the fourth to extend their lead to 13-0. The Presidents scored three more in the seventh to go up 16-0 before the Yellow Jackets bats woke up.
With two outs in the top of the eighth and two men on, junior designated hitter
Tyler Woodrow (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine-Richland) singled home freshman left fielder
Zach Boslet (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) for the first run of the game. Then, freshman third baseman
Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough) followed with another RBI single that scored sophomore shortstop
Logan Gottshall (Cresson, Pa. / Bishop Carroll) for the team's second run of the contest.
W&J added five more in the bottom half of the frame, but Waynesburg responded with two more runs in the top of the ninth. Freshman first baseman
Marcos Mendez (Ponce, Puerto Rico / Westminster (Md.)) drove in Lee on a fielder's choice with no outs in the frame. Gottshall pushed across freshman second baseman
Cory Cox (Pomeroy, Ohio / Meigs) to bring the score to its 21-4 final.
Waynesburg finishes the four-game season series against the Presidents Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
