WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 13) – The Waynesburg University baseball welcomed Chatham to town on Tuesday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. After dropping the opener 3-0, the Yellow Jacket bats woke up in a big way to post an 11-4 victory in game two.
Waynesburg (5-13, 3-12) got a strong pitching performance from junior starter
Joe Sabolek (Lynnwood-Pricedale, Pa. / Belle Vernon) in the opener. Sabolek allowed three runs, only two of which were earned, on five hits and no walks. He also struck out seven Cougars (6-12, 5-9) during 4.2 innings of work.
Junior
Corey Fischer (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bethel Park) gave his team 2.1 innings of one-hit shutout baseball from the home bullpen.
Four different Jackets logged one hit each in the opener, including junior catcher
Tyler Woodrow (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine-Richland) who doubled.
Game two was a much different affair than the early contest. After Waynesburg and Chatham combined for 10 hits, eight of which were singles, in game one, The second half of the twin bill saw 22 base knocks.
After Chatham took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, Waynesburg tied the score with a two-spot of its own in the bottom of the opening frame. Senior right fielder
Brandon Durbin (Cresson, Pa. / Bishop Carroll) singled home junior shortstop
Ty Kildow (Bethesda, Ohio / Union Local). The next batter, freshman third baseman
Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough) doubled in graduate student designated hitter
John Przybylinski to tie the score.
Waynesburg took its first lead of the day, when Woodrow drew a bases-loaded walk in the third that allowed freshman centerfielder
Zach Boslet (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) to trot home. During the next at-bat, the Jacket advantage doubled to 4-2 thanks to a sacrifice fly from Durbin.
The Jacket lead continued to grow thanks to a two-run single by Woodrow in the third. Chatham was able to cut its deficit back to just two scores at 6-4 following a two-spot by the visiting team in the fourth.
Waynesburg put the game out of reach with two more runs in the fourth, a run in the sixth and the game's final two scores seventh.
Junior
Cody Ray (St. Clairsville, Oho / Union Local) got the start and allowed four runs, all earned, on seven hits and three walks. He matched Sabolek's strikeout mark from game one with seven punchouts.
Waynesburg got another stellar bullpen appearance in the late tilt, this one courtesy of freshman
Ryan Sullivan (Taylorstown, Pa. / McGuffey). Sullivan was almost perfect over 5.1 innings, during which he yielded just a hit and a walk, while ringing up four opposing hitters and picking up the victory.
The Jackets are back in action on Saturday, April 17, when they host Thiel for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
