Softball hosts Grove City for PAC DH

Yellow Jackets drop two to Wolverines

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 15) – The Waynesburg University softball team played its first games since April 5 and its first home contest since March 30, when it hosted Grove City for a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader on Thursday. The Yellow Jackets showed a bit of rust from their lengthy layoff as they were swept by visiting Grove City.

The Wolverines (10-12, 5-3) took the opener 12-1 in five innings, before completing the sweep with a 5-2 triumph in the late contest.

Grove City combined 12 hits with four Yellow Jacket (11-11, 2-2) errors to take a 12-0 lead after two innings. The home team finally broke up the shutout in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Reghan Benschoter (Newark, Ohio / Granville) drove in freshman Ella Brookman (Washington, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston).

Five different Jackets logged one hit each in the opener. Three different Waynesburg pitchers combined to work game one. Senior Emma Kubalak (Spring Mills, Pa. / Penns Valley), Brookman and freshman Kara May (Indian Head, Pa. / Connellsville) gave up just three earned runs over the five-inning affair.

GCC jumped out to a 1-0 edge in the first inning of game two. Unlike the early contest, Waynesburg answered right back with a tally of its own in the bottom of the frame. After sophomore catcher Brin Hunter (West Alexander, Pa. / McGuffey) led off with a double, Benschoter followed with a single. Brookman came up with an RBI groundout that tied the score.

Unfortunately, the Jackets were unable to push another run across home plate until the bottom of the sixth. Meanwhile, GCC pushed three runs across in the third and added its final tally in the fourth to go up 5-1.

Freshman first baseman Emma Bliss hit into a run-scoring fielder's choice in the sixth that drove in freshman third baseman Sydney Senay (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) with the game's final run.

Brookman made her second pitching appearance of the day and worked all seven innings, during which she gave up nine hits and walked three, while striking out three.

Hunter went three-for-four with a double, while Senay posted a two-for-three outing with a double of her own.

Thursday marked the beginning of a four-day stretch in which the Jackets will play six games over three doubleheaders, all of which are at home. Waynesburg hosts Geneva on Saturday, April 17. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
