LATROBE, Pa. (April 17) – The Waynesburg University football team played its final regular season game of its spring schedule on Saturday, when it traveled to Saint Vincent. The Yellow Jacket offense had easily its best game of the season, but so did Saint Vincent, as the home-standing Bearcats picked up a 56-26 victory.
Unlike the final 45 minutes of play, the first quarter was a low-scoring one. After SVC (2-2, 2-1) opened the scoring with a touchdown, freshman kicker
Keegan Raabe (Tyrone, Pa. / Tyrone) knocked through his first collegiate field goal after connecting from 27 yards out with 2:19 left to play in the opening period.
Unfortunately, the Bearcats blew open the four-point game by outscoring Waynesburg (0-4, 0-3) 28-7 in the second quarter. One bright spot in the second was freshman wide receiver
Jahmiq Johnson, who pulled in a 26-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback
Tyler Raines (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach) just 31 seconds before halftime to make the score 35-10.
The third quarter swung back to a more defensive rhythm, as Saint Vincent outscored Waynesburg 7-0 to take a 42-10 advantage into the fourth quarter. The Jackets ended the day on a high note by outscoring the opposition 16-14 over those final 15 minutes.
Raines hooked up with senior wide receiver
Brendyn Tvaroch (Warren, Ohio / Howland) on a 48-yard scoring play 1:36 into the final period, before sophomore running back
Justin Flack (Derry, Pa. / Derry) punched in the day's final touchdown from 13 yards out with 8:21 showing on the game clock.
The final two points of the contest came by way of a safety in Waynesburg's favor.
Flack and Raines both posted their top outings of the season to lead the Waynesburg offense. Flack carried the ball a game-high 25 times for a contest-best 158 yards and his second score of the season. He also caught two passes for 26 yards.
Raines completed 15-of-23 attempts for 197 yards, two scores and an interception. He and Johnson seemed to establish an immediate rapport in their first varsity action together. The first-year pass-catcher pulled in a contest-best six receptions for a team-high 90 yards. Tvaroch added four catches for 63 yards.
The Jacket defense was paced by freshman
Alec Hendal (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) who led Waynesburg in solo tackles (five), assists (four), total tackles (nine) and tackles for loss (2.0).
The Yellow Jackets are scheduled to wrap up the 2020-21 spring season on Friday, April, 23, when they host Geneva for the PAC postseason crossover game between the number-four teams in both the PAC North and South Divisions. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
