Softball hosts W&J for senior day

Yellow Jackets drop pair of PAC games to Presidents

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 18) – The Waynesburg University softball team hosted Washington & Jefferson for a senior day doubleheader on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets celebrated their three seniors before the first pitch, but had little to celebrate afterwards, as the Presidents left town with a pair of wins.

W&J (13-12-1, 5-5) took the two games by the scores of 8-2 and 6-3.

The visitors opened the scoring with a run in inning two of game one and tallied the eventual game-winning runs in the fourth, when they posted a three-spot. Waynesburg (11-15, 2-6) got on the board in the bottom of the frame when a W&J error allowed freshman Ella Brookman (Washington, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) to sprint home.

The Presidents responded with three more scores in the fifth to lock down the win. Freshman Emma Bliss (Uniontown, Pa. / Laurel Highlands) singled in the game's final run in the sixth. Brookman crossed home plate for a second time in the opener.

Game two saw W&J get off to another quick start, this time building a 4-0 advantage after two innings of play. Waynesburg cut its deficit in half in the third when freshman Sydney Senay (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) drove in sophomore Brin Hunter (West Alexander, Pa. / McGuffey) to make the score 4-1. The host squad used some small ball to record its second run of the game. A Bliss groundout was enough to get sophomore Reghan Benschoter (Newark, Ohio / Granville) across home plate to make the score 4-2.

W&J regained a three-run lead in the fourth, but the Jackets answered in the sixth to again cut the deficit to two (5-3). Brookman again played a role in the scoring by singling home freshman Kara May (Indian Head, Pa. / Connellsville).

Unfortunately, the Presidents posted the day's final score in the seventh to seal up the sweep.

Waynesburg is back in action on Tuesday, April 20, when it makes a trip to Saint Vincent. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 3:30 p.m.
