WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 7) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team hosted Westminster for its first home match of the spring. The two conference opponents battled over nine flights, but the Titans' 2-1 edge in doubles competition allowed them to take the match 5-4.
Things started well for Waynesburg (0-2, 0-2) as the number-one doubles team of junior
Joey English (Smithfield, Pa. / Homeschooled) and freshman
Ethan Lown earned an 8-4 victory at first doubles. Unfortunately, for the Yellow Jackets, Westminster (2-2, 2-2) bounced back to take flights two and three.
English and Lown led a comeback try with wins at first and second singles. English scored a 6-4, 6-0 triumph at the number-one spot. Lown battled his opponent at the number-two flight and came back to score a 5-7, 6-1, 10-9 triumph. Waynesburg's final win of the afternoon came at third singles courtesy of junior
Conor Cassidy (Huntingtown, Md. / Huntingtown). Cassidy swept through his opponent 6-0, 6-3.
Once again, the visitors rebounded from a rough start to get past the Orange and Black. Westminster swept the fourth, fifth and sixth singles flights to pull out the win.
The match was delayed by a brief bank of rain showers.
The Yellow Jackets have a quick turnaround before its next match, which comes tomorrow against Grove City. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
