WAYNESBURG, Pa. (May 8) – The Waynesburg University baseball team celebrated senior day on Saturday by hosting Franciscan for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. Unfortunately, the celebration didn't last too long after the opening pitch, as the Barons swept the Yellow Jackets by the final scores of 8-0 and 8-1.
Franciscan (16-17, 15-11) and the Jackets (12-20, 9-17) played through a pair of scoreless innings, before the visitors tallied the eventual game-winning run in the top of the third. The Barons added a score in the fourth and another in the fifth to expand their advantage to 3-0. Franciscan blew the game open with five runs in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.
Two of the day's senior honorees, outfielder
Ryan Mills (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) and designated hitter
Chris Lee (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) combined for three of Waynesburg's four base hits in the early game. Mills went two-for-four to pace the Jacket attack.
Game two followed a similar script to the opener, as neither team was able to break up the shutout through four innings of play. Franciscan posted another big inning by tallying three runs in the fifth to take the advantage.
The Jackets finally got on the board in the bottom of the eighth, when another of the afternoon's senior honorees,
Tyler Srbinovich (Warren, Ohio / Niles McKinley), lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed freshman
Justin Clevenger (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette) to come home and cut the deficit to 3-1.
Unfortunately, what little momentum the Jackets had built up in the eighth was dashed by Franciscan in the top of the ninth, when the green and Gold racked up five insurance runs to bring about the final score. An error in the eighth led to four of those runs being of the unearned variety.
Freshman
Zach Boslet (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) was the biggest highlight of a rough day for the Jackets. The rookie outfielder went three-for-three in the late contest.
Waynesburg wraps up its 2020-21 season tomorrow with a road trip to Franciscan. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
