BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Sept. 9) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team opened up the fall portion of the 2021-22 season on Thursday with a road Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match at Geneva. The Yellow Jackets fell 9-0 to the Golden Tornadoes.
Though Waynesburg (0-1, 0-1) was shut out on the day, there were several tightly contested flights. Senior
Kyleigh Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) and junior
Hayley Sweeney (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland) battled their opponents at first doubles, but came up just short in an 8-6 contest.
Junior
Madison Ramsey (Shanksville, Pa. / Shanksville-Stony Creek) and junior
Marina Hastings (Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) found themselves in a similar contest at second doubles. Unfortunately, they also came up just short of victory, falling 8-7.
Schmidt, Hastings and senior
Emily Schafer (Meyersdale, Pa. / Meyersdale) all came close to picking up wins in the opening sets of their respective singles matches. All three sets went to a seventh point.
Waynesburg is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 12, when it hosts Washington & Jefferson for a PAC match. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
