Volleyball battles Grove City

Yellow Jackets and Wolverines go back-and-forth in PAC showdown

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 28) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team hosted Grove City on Tuesday evening for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown. The match lasted four highly competitive sets and despite the efforts of the Yellow Jackets and a raucous Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse crowd, the Wolverines left town with a 3-1 win.

Grove City (9-5, 4-1) jumped out to a 1-0 match lead by taking the opening set (25-20). Waynesburg (6-8, 2-4) rebounded by taking set two 25-20, despite falling in an early 8-0 hole.

Sets three and four were both marathon affairs that featured several dramatic lead changes. Waynesburg recorded runs of four-straight and five-straight points in set four, but the visitors tallied four of the final five points to pull out a 26-24 triumph.

Set five was a memorable one, as the Jackets built an early 12-6 advantage. Waynesburg stayed ahead of Grove City for the majority of the set, but the Wolverines were able to set up match point when they held a 25-24 edge. Back-to-back points for the home team put the Jackets ahead 26-25 and in position to force a fifth set. Unfortunately, Grove City was able to string together the final two points of the night to pull out the 30-28 victory in set four.

Senior Alyson Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / St. Joseph Central Catholic) had a night to remember, as she racked up an amazing 59 digs, which averaged out to 14.75 per set. Speaking of defense, sophomore Kayla Stohon (Summerhill, Pa./ Forest Hills) posted a match-best four blocks.

Freshman Makayla Osborn (Salem, Ohio / Heartland Christian School) posted another strong night on the attack with a match-best 17 kills. Her 23 digs gave her another double-double on the season. Senior Mya Brooks (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) joined Osborn in double digits with 12 successful attacks.

Freshman Paige Cousley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) helped out the attack with a match-high 27 assists. She joined Osborn in the double-double club with 19 digs and logged a team-high three service aces.

Waynesburg now turns its attention to Saturday's home PAC tri-match with Saint Vincent and Thiel. The Yellow Jackets are scheduled to open the day at 11 a.m. against Thiel. The Tomcats and Bearcats are next scheduled to be on the court at 1 p.m., before Waynesburg tangles with Saint Vincent to close the afternoon with a 3 p.m. match.
