Volleyball wraps up two-day run at Bearcat Challenge

Jackets face off with Pitt Bradford and Hiram

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 4) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team wrapped up its two-day stay at the Saint Vincent Bearcat Challenge on Saturday with matches against Pitt Bradford and Hiram. A young Yellow Jackets squad dropped a five-set thriller against Bradford, before falling 3-0 to the Terriers.
 
After dropping a 25-23 first set against UPB (1-2), the Yellow Jackets (2-3) roared back by taking sets two and three by identical 25-18 final scores. Unfortunately, the Panthers rebounded to take set four and set up a winner-take-all fifth set. Bradford completed the comeback with a 15-11 triumph in that deciding game.
 
Freshmen Makayla Osborn (Salem, Ohio / Heartland Christian School) and Madisen Dayton (Ridgeley, W.Va. / Calvary Christian Academy) paced the Waynesburg offense with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Another first-year competitor, freshman Paige Cousley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) helped out the attack with 23 assists. Sophomore Mikayla Baniaga (Kalihi, Hawaii / Kamehameha Schools Kapalama) chipped in 19 helpers.
 
Sophomore Gillian Mulcahy (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) paced Waynesburg's defensive efforts with a match-high 28 digs. Osborn completed her first collegiate double-double with 20 digs.
 
Cousley led all players with four service aces.
 
Hiram (4-1) took the second match by the set scores of 25-16, 26-24, 25-18. Full statistics from the late contest should be available in the near future.
 
Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 11, when it travels to a tri-match at Penn State Greater Allegheny. The Yellow Jackets will also face Pitt Greensburg.
