WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 4) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team kicked off its 2021 season on a warm, sunny Saturday against the University of Mount Union. The Yellow Jackets fell behind early at John F. Wiley Stadium and couldn't complete a commendable comeback try as they fell 2-1 to the visiting Purple Raiders.
Mount Union (2-0) opened the scoring in the eighth minute and took that 1-0 lead into halftime. The Raiders doubled their advantage to 2-0 in the 72
nd minute, but the host squad (0-1) wasn't ready to give up the fight.
Freshman
Haley Johnson (Somerset, Pa. / Rockwood) tallied her first collegiate goal less than two minutes later off an assist from junior
Emily Redman (La Plata, Md. / La Plata) to make the score 2-1. Unfortunately, the Jackets were unable to tally an equalizer before the sounding of the final horn.
Waynesburg was able to stick with Mount Union despite being outshot by a 26-11 margin. However, the shots on goal tallies were much tighter, with the visitors putting nine on net, to Waynesburg's seven.
Junior goalkeeper
Autumn Blair (Penn Hills, Pa. / Penn Hills) tallied seven saves over 90 minutes of action.
Waynesburg returns to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 7, with a home game against La Roche. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
