WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 12) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted Washington and Jefferson on Wednesday night for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) battle with the Presidents. Though they trailed the entirety of the contest, the Yellow Jackets made a run at victory in the second half. Unfortunately, the comeback try came up short, as W&J picked up the 75-64 win.
After the Presidents (8-3, 5-0) built a 43-31 halftime lead, Waynesburg (1-10, 1-4) battled back in the third quarter with a 13-3 run that turned a 48-35 deficit into just a three-point differential at 51-48 with 1:49 remaining in the period. A pair of free throws with 12 seconds showing on the clock put the Presidents up five by the time the fourth quarter got underway.
The Jackets stayed within striking distance of taking the lead and trailed by just four (59-55) with 7:41 remaining in the contest. Unfortunately, a 10-2 President run that wasn't broken by the host squad until there was less than three minutes left to play put the visitors ahead 69-57 and closed out the win for W&J.
Though it didn't lead to a victory, senior guard
Kacey Kastroll (South Park, Pa. / South Park) tallied a game-high 21 points on a very efficient six-of-nine shooting night. She also knocked down three-of-six from three-point range and all six of his free throw attempts. Kastroll added five rebounds to a productive night.
Sophomore guard
Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) and senior center
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) tallied 13 points each in the contest. Fuller just missed out on a double-double with nine rebounds and swatted away a pair of blocks.
Senior point guard
Anika Dansby (Massilon, Ohio / Washington) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, four of which were of the offensive variety, as the Jackets held a 42-37 advantage on the glass.
The game was ultimately decided at the free throw line and beyond the three-point arc. W&J made 11-of-28 treys, while the Jackets knocked down six-of-20 from long distance. The Presidents went 22-of-32 foul shots, while the host squad connected on 16-of-24 at the charity stripe.
Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, when it travels to Geneva. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
