PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Jan. 24) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team traveled to Chatham on Monday night for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game with the Cougars. The Yellow Jackets gave the host squad all it could handle, but a big fourth quarter led to a 66-54 Chatham win.
Things started well for the visitors, as Waynesburg (1-14, 1-8) tallied the first six points of the game on a pair of field goals from senior
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) sandwiched around two points from junior
Anika Dansby (Massilon, Ohio / Washington). The Cougars answered with eight points of their own, before the Jackets regained the lead following a pair of free throws from freshman
Madisen Dayton (Ridgeley, W.Va. / Calvary Christian Academy) and another jumper from Fuller.
The two squads traded the lead on multiple occasions before Waynesburg took a 16-14 edge into the second quarter. That lead grew to 18-14 following a Dayton field goal to open the period. As another entertaining period reached its stretch run, the Jackets held a 27-25 lead with 1:45 remaining until halftime. However, Chatham closed the quarter with a 5-0 run that gave it a 30-27 advantage at the break.
Momentum swung back into Waynesburg's favor during the opening minutes of the third quarter. The Orange and Black put together an 11-2 run over the first 2:07 of play that gave it a team-high six-point lead at 38-32. The Yellow Jackets held onto the lead for the remainder of the third quarter, but a jumper with 16 seconds showing on the clock tied the game at 43-43.
Unfortunately, a 7-0 Chatham run gave the host squad a 50-43 lead 2:33 into the fourth. That lead grew to 13 points, before the Cougars closed out the win by outscoring the Jackets 23-11 over the final 10 minutes of play.
Fuller led the Jackets with a game-high 16 points on seven-of-10 shooting. She added eight rebounds to another productive night on the court. Dayton added 11 points and five rebounds, while junior
Leighton Croft (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) came off the bench to post an eight-point, five-board effort.
The Jackets return home on Wednesday, Jan. 26, to host Saint Vincent in another PAC contest. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
