BETHANY, W.Va. (Nov 19) – Junior guard
Avery Robinson (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) had one of the most productive games of her collegiate career to lead Waynesburg against Bethany on Saturday. Unfortunately, her big day on the court wasn't enough for a Yellow Jacket victory, as the Bison picked up an 82-74 Presidents' Athletic Conference win.
Robinson exploded for a game-high 29 points for Waynesburg (0-3, 0-2) on 11-for-19 shooting from the floor, which included a five-for-10 effort from three-point range. She added four rebounds, two assists and two steals and committed just one turnover over a full 40 minutes on the court.
A slow start to the contest put the Jackets behind the eight ball, as Bethany (1-2, 1-1) held a 17-8 lead after 10 minutes of play. Waynesburg fired out of the gates in period number two and pulled to within just two points of the Bison (17-15) thanks to a 7-0 surge, all of which came courtesy of junior guard
Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside). Wolf knocked down a pair of free throws, connected on a two-point field goal and drilled a three pointer during that stretch.
Unfortunately, Bethany answered with a run of its own that produced 10 unanswered points and put the host squad up 27-15. Robinson broke her team out of the skid and led them to a strong finish to the first half. The Jackets tallied the final six points of the second quarter thanks to field goals from freshman Liv Ammons (Crossroads, W.Va. / Clay-Battelle), Robinson and freshman Aubrey Burns (Kittanning, Pa. / Armstrong).
Burns' basket was the last of the half and when the two teams broke for their respective locker rooms, Bethany held a 37-31 edge.
Bethany bounced back in the third quarter by outscoring the visitors 24-19 to give it a 61-50 advantage into the final 10 minutes of the contest. The Bison lead grew to 65-52 in the early portion of the fourth, but a quick 8-2 run by the Jackets pulled the Orange and Black back to within 67-60 with 6:17 showing on the clock.
Waynesburg kept the pressure on the host squad and thanks to a basket from freshman Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan), the Jackets were down just five points with 59 seconds left to play. Unfortunately, the day ultimately belonged to Bethany, which scored the final three points of the game to close out the victory.
Along with Robinson's monster performance, the Jackets also got 15 points from Wolf, eight of which came at the charity stripe. Ammons tied for the game lead with eight rebounds, while also dropping in eight points.
Waynesburg finally plays its home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 22, when it hosts Thiel in a PAC matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
