Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fuller dominates on senior day

Third-quarter struggles lead to loss against Geneva

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 19) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team celebrated senior day prior to Saturday's regular season finale against Geneva at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The two Presidents' Athletic Conference opponents put on an entertaining show for the gathered crowd and by the time the final horn had sounded, the Golden Tornadoes left town with a 78-73 win.

The game was ultimately decided in the third quarter. With the two teams tied 19-19 at the end of the first, Waynesburg (5-19, 5-13) used a 10-0 run to turn a 28-25 deficit into a 35-28 advantage with 2:35 remaining until halftime. Geneva (9-13, 8-9) was able to narrow the gap with the host squad over the final minutes of the quarter, but the Jackets still led 37-34 at the break.

The game's final result was ultimately decided during a 15-2 Golden Tornado surge that put the visitors ahead 52-41 with just under six minutes remaining in the third. Geneva led by as many as 12 before the quarter came to an end. When it did, Waynesburg found itself in a 62-52 hole.

The Orange and Black wasn't about to give up the fight, however, and the home squad put on a show for its fans over the final 10 minutes. A 13-6 run to open the fourth pulled Waynesburg to within a single point of tying the game (68-67) with 4:21 showing on the game clock.

Geneva rebuilt a five-point advantage with 46 seconds left to play. Junior guard Anika Dansby (Massilon, Ohio / Washington) dropped in a layup with 23 seconds remaining in the contest that made the tally 76-73. Unfortunately, a game-tying three-point attempt missed the mark, and the GT's were able to knock down a pair of game-clinching free throws.

It was a memorable senior day for both of the day's honorees, but for very different reasons. Guard Kacey Kastroll (South Park, Pa. / South Park), who was suffering from a leg injury, still got to hit the floor for her final home game. In a tremendous show of sportsmanship by Geneva, Kastroll not only started the contest, but was allowed to drop in the game's first two points before heading to the bench.

Fuller on the other hand, put together a truly dominant final showing in front of her home fans. She easily set game highs in both points (29) and rebounds (17), while tying for the contest lead in blocks (three) and dishing out three assists. Fuller shot 13-of-24 from the floor and three-of-four from the free throw line, and seven of her rebounds were of the offensive variety.

Sophomore guard Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) added 17 points for Waynesburg.

Both teams struggled when it came to ball control, as they combined for 54 turnovers, with Waynesburg losing 29 of them. The Yellow Jackets also yielded 31 offensive rebounds that led to 34 second-chance points.

With the regular season wrapped up, Waynesburg will begin preparations for the 2022 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tournament. The eighth-seeded Jackets will host ninth-seeded Thiel on Monday, Feb. 21, for a 7 p.m. tipoff. The Yellow Jackets won both regular season meetings with the Tomcats by an average margin of victory of 19 points.
