GAME 2 BOX SCORE
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (March 11) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled to Wilson on Friday for a rare weekday early afternoon doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets dropped a heart-breaking 5-4 final score in game one and followed that with a 14-0 setback against the Phoenix.
Game one opened as a pitchers' dual, with neither team able to push a run across home plate until the bottom of the fourth when Wilson (9-2) took a 1-0 lead. That advantage doubled to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, before the Jackets (2-6) got things going in the top half of the sixth.
Waynesburg posted a four spot in its half of the inning and looked poised to pull the road upset. Sophomore third baseman
Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough) got things going with an RBI single that cut the Phoenix lead to 2-1. Senior second baseman
Cody Ray (St. Clairsville, Ohio / Union Local) struck the biggest blow of the game for the visitors when his two-run single gave the visitors their first lead of the day at 3-2. Sophomore centerfielder
Zach Boslet (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) padded the Waynesburg advantage with a run-scoring single that made the score 4-2.
Unfortunately, the sixth inning was also kind to Wilson, which tallied three runs, thanks in part to a pair of wild pitches. The Jackets were able to load the bases in the top of the seventh, but with two outs on the board, the Phoenix induced the game-ending groundout.
Waynesburg suffered the loss, despite outhitting Wilson 10-7. Freshman leftfielder
Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler), senior catcher
Tyler Woodrow (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine-Richland) and freshman
Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) logged two hits each in the opener. Woodrow also logged a double for Waynesburg's only extra-base hit.
Williams got the start on the mound and took a no-decision after allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks over 5.1 innings of work. He struck out five opposing hitters on the day. Bell moved over from third to the bump to retire a pair of batters in the sixth.
Wilson used three big innings to down Waynesburg in the late contest. The host squad scored three times in the first, five in the fourth and six in the fifth on just 11 hits. It was helped out by three Jacket errors, eight walks and three hit batsmen. Engelmore and took the pitching loss after allowing three runs over one inning of work.
Ray was a bright spot for the Jackets in the late contest, as he collected two singles in three at-bats.
Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday, March 16, when it hosts Penn State Behrend for the 2022 home opener. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 3 p.m.
