MEADVILLE, Pa. (March 17) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled to Allegheny on Thursday afternoon for a seven-inning doubleheader with the Gators. The Yellow Jackets fell by the final scores of 10-1 and 8-2.
Allegheny (8-4) built a 10-0 lead in the opener before Waynesburg (3-8) broke up the shutout in the top of the seventh thanks to an RBI single by sophomore centerfielder
Lane Ours (Moorefield, W.Va. / Moorefield). Freshman shortstop
Todd Burner (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg South) scored the Jackets' only run of the opener.
Freshman
Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) got the start on the mound and took the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks over 3.2 innings of work. The first-year hurler tallied four strikeouts during his latest appearance.
Six different Jackets tallied one hit each in the opener.
After falling behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning of game two, Waynesburg tied things up in the top of the second, when Burner teed off on his first homerun of the season. The two-run bomb that also brought sophomore third baseman
Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough) was the first of the year for the Jackets.
Unfortunately, Allegheny grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the second with a two-spot that made the score 4-2. The home team added a run in the third, a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to close out the win.
Freshman
Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) got the start on the hill and took the loss after allowing five runs, four of which were earned, on nine hits and a walk.
Waynesburg returns to competition on Sunday, March 20, when it travels to La Roche for a seven-inning doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
