WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 18) – The Waynesburg University softball team continued its busy week by hosting Penn State DuBois for a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets ran their current winning streak to five games by downing the Nittany Lions with the final scores of 4-1 and 15-4 (five innings).
Freshman lefty
Sydney Wilson (Pentress, W.Va. / Clay Battelle) continued her impressive debut collegiate season by improving to 4-1 in the circle. Wilson piled up 12 strikeouts while giving up just three hits, all of which were singles, in yet another complete-game win.
The Jackets (10-3) got to its offense early by manufacturing two runs in the first inning. Freshman centerfielder
Dilyn Roberts (Sellersburg, Ind. / Henryville) got things going with a bunt single and moved to third on a double by junior catcher
Brin Hunter (West Alexander, Pa. / McGuffey). Waynesburg then got back-to-back RBI groundouts by sophomore first baseman
Ella Brookman (Washington, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) and sophomore third baseman
Sydney Senay (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan).
Waynesburg doubled its advantage in the third thanks again to the sophomore pair. Brookman doubled home Hunter to make the score 3-0, before Senay brought her home with a run-scoring single.
Penn State DuBois (2-6) finally got to Wilson in the fifth for its only run of the game, but it was too little, too late for the visitors.
Roberts led Waynesburg's offensive efforts in the opener by going two-for-three from the leadoff spot.
Game two saw the Jackets jump on the Nittany Lions early for four runs in the first, three in the second and a massive eight-spot in the third. Once again, DuBois was able to find some offense late in a contest, but two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth wasn't nearly enough to force a split on the day.
The Jackets piled up 14 hits in the win, half of which were for extra bases (five doubles, two triples). Brookman doubled and tripled, scored twice and drove in four runs and that only tells half of the story of her day in game two. She also worked five innings in the circle during which she allowed three earned runs on six hits and two walks with one strikeout.
Freshman right fielder
Kiana Bagnell (Inwood, W.Va. / Musselman) did about as well as a player could in the leadoff spot by going two-for-two with two walks and three runs scored. Hunter logged a two-for-two performance with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. She was relieved behind the plate by freshman
Katelynn Brittenbaugh (Glenshaw, Pa. / Shaler) who added a base hit and an RBI.
Sophomore shortstop
Kayla Gratton (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) added a one-for-three showing at the dish with two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman centerfielder
Mackenzie Kearns (Elizabeth, Pa. / Elizabeth Forward) chipped in a two-for-three effort with the stick that included two RBIs and a run scored.
Waynesburg plays games five and six of this week on tomorrow when Pitt Greensburg comes to town for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
