Softball wraps up successful spring trip

Yellow Jackets down Purchase 10-0 in five innings

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 4) – The Waynesburg University softball team wrapped up its run at the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic by facing off with Purchase College (N.Y.) on Friday. The Yellow Jackets capped its trip down south on a high note by shutting out the Panthers 10-0.

Waynesburg (6-3) put the game out of reach early by scoring nine runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore first baseman Ella Brookman (Washington, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) got things going with a two-run double. After a Purchase (0-3) error allowed run number three to come home, freshman left fielder Hannah Yorty (Monessen, Pa. / Monessen) roped an RBI double to make the score 4-0.

Waynesburg's next batter, sophomore shortstop Kara May (Indian Head, Pa. / Connellsville) expanded her team's advantage to 6-0 with a two-run double and then made the score 7-0 when she scored off an RBI single by sophomore right fielder Alayna McKay (Cochranton, Pa. / Cochranton). Sophomore Emma Bliss (Uniontown, Pa. / Laurel Highlands) capped the big opening frame with a two-run double that made the score 9-0.

The Jackets closed out the win with their 10th run in the bottom of the third. McKay smacked an RBI single that allowed junior second baseman Lauren Lober (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) to cross home plate.

Waynesburg's 10 runs on 14 hits were more than enough support for sophomore pitcher Kayla Gratton (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway), who worked a five-inning complete game to pick up the win in the circle. She allowed four hits, all singles, and no walks with three strikeouts. She also went two-for-four with two runs scored.

Lober reached base all four times she went to the plate with three singles and a walk. She also scored twice. Yorty and McKay each posted a pair of hits.

After returning to the Keystone State, Waynesburg will play its home opener as part of a doubleheader with Allegheny on Tuesday, March 15. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
