NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (April 20) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled to face Geneva in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets put together one of their top all-around performances of the season, as they swept the Golden Tornadoes by the final scores of 6-1 and 5-0.
Waynesburg (9-19, 5-11) never trailed for the entirety of the twin bill and took its first lead of the day when sophomore designated hitter
Lane Ours (Moorefield, W.Va. / Moorefield) recorded a sacrifice fly in the second inning that plated sophomore third baseman
Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough).
The Jackets took full control of the opener in the third when they tallied three runs on just three hits. Freshman
Tyler Sullivan (Wesley Chapel, Fla. / Wesley Chapel) led things off with a double and proceeded to steal third. Freshman
Bryce Bedilion (Clarksville, Pa. / Jefferson-Morgan) grew Waynesburg's lead to 2-0 with an RBI single during the ensuing at-bat. Freshman
Dalton Mount (Sykesville, Md. / Westminster) loaded the bases when he reached on an error and was followed by graduate student
Brandon Durbin (Cresson, Pa. / Bishop Carroll) who brought Bedilion home with a sac fly. Bell made the score 4-0 by singling home Mount, before Geneva logged back-to-back outs to close the frame.
Geneva (8-21, 4-12) scored its only run of the day in the bottom of the fourth. The Jackets answered back with the game's final score in the fifth. Bedilion got things going with a leadoff triple. A pair of walks and a pair of strikeouts loaded the bases with two outs on the board. Freshman
Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) waited out a third walk in the inning to finally allow Bedilion to trot home and make the score 5-1.
The home team managed to put two runners on in both the sixth and seventh frames, but freshman starting pitcher
Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) managed to get out of both jams to put the finishing touches on a complete-game victory. He did so, despite Geneva outhitting Waynesburg 8-4, with Bedilion collecting two of those hits. The Jackets took advantage of five walks and an error to pick up the victory.
Engelmore struck out five and walked just one in his first collegiate complete game, which took just 95 minutes to complete.
Bedilion gave the Jackets a similar effort in game two as he recorded his first collegiate win on the mound. He scattered three singles and three walks over six shutout innings and picked up a strikeout in his first decision with the Orange and Black. Sophomore
Ryan Sullivan (Taylorstown, Pa. / McGuffey) closed out the victory with three shutout innings of his own. He also gave up three singles, but didn't walk a batter and struck out two.
Waynesburg got all the runs it needed in the top of the first when Durbin teed off on a two-run homer.
Sophomore second baseman
Nolan Vertullo (Pittsburgh, Pa. / South Fayette), who had a monster game two, made it 3-0 in the third when he scored on a wild pitch. He followed that up with a two-run single in the sixth and an RBI base knock in the eighth to put the finishing touches on the Jackets' latest victory.
As previously mentioned, Vertullo was a one-man offense in the late contest. He went four-for-four with a walk, two runs scored and three RBIs. Junior shortstop
Todd Burner (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg South) added two hits and a walk with two runs scored.
Waynesburg is scheduled to be back on the road tomorrow when it travels to Franciscan for a pair of PAC battles with the Barons. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
