Jackets use seven-run eighth to halt red hot Saint Vincent

Waynesburg snaps Bearcats' 16-game winning streak with 12-6 triumph

LATROBE, Pa. (April 24) – The Waynesburg University baseball team ended its week on a big high note when it traveled to face Saint Vincent, which was riding a 16-game winning streak heading into the contest. The Yellow Jackets not only halted that stretch of victories, but also got revenge for a Saturday sweep at the hands of the Bearcats with a 12-6 triumph.

Things didn't start well for Waynesburg (10-23, 6-15), which fell behind 4-0 after three innings of play. However, the Yellow Jackets turned things around starting in the top of the fourth.

Freshman Tyler Sullivan (Wesley Chapel, Fla. / Wesley Chapel) got the Jackets on the board with a fielder's choice RBI. The next batter, freshman Bryce Bedilion (Clarksville, Pa. / Jefferson-Morgan) singled in his team's second run to the cut the deficit to 4-2.

Waynesburg took its first lead of the day in the top of the sixth. A wild pitch allowed sophomore Zach Boslet (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) to sprint home and make the score 4-3. Freshman Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) followed with a game-tying RBI single. The next batter, graduate student Brandon Durbin (Cresson, Pa. / Bishop Carroll) gave the visitors the lead with a 5-4 edge.

Momentum swung back to Saint Vincent (20-9, 16-3), which tied the game back up in the sixth and added a run in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead. Facing a disappointing loss, the Jackets weren't about to give up the fight. In fact, they were about to explode for an eighth inning that would more than seal up the victory.

The Jackets sent 13 batters to the plate and used five hits, three walks and two errors to score seven times and surge ahead 12-6. Waynesburg tied the game at 6-6 when freshman Dalton Mount (Sykesville, Md. / Westminster) sprinted home on a wild pitch. Another Bearcat mishap, this one a passed ball, allowed Bedilion to cross home plate with the eventual game-winning run.

Durbin doubled in run number eight, before freshman Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) singled to make the score 9-6. Sophomore Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough) produced an RBI single of his own to stretch his team's advantage to 10-6. After the Jackets loaded the bases, Mount waited out a run-scoring walk, before an error gave Bell the opportunity to score and bring about the final tally of 12-6.

Waynesburg's breakout frame allowed Engelmore to pick up the win in relief. He gave up one run on five hits and no walks over 3.2 innings of work. He relieved sophomore starting pitching Ryan Sullivan (Taylorstown, Pa. / McGuffey), who yielded five runs, three of which were earned, on five hits and two walks, while striking out four.

Waynesburg outhit Saint Vincent by a 17-10 margin and was helped out by four errors and eight walks yielded by the Bearcats. The Yellow Jacket offense was paced by Durbin and Williams, who logged three hits each in the winning effort. Engelmore, Boslet, Tyler Sullivan and senior catcher Tyler Woodrow (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine-Richland) added two hits each on the afternoon.

The Jackets are back in action on Friday, April 29, when they host Bethany for senior day. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
