WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 2) – The Waynesburg University baseball team hosted Grove City for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets were defeated in both halves of the twin bill.
Game one was a well-played, quick paced seven-inning affair that took less than two hours to complete. Unfortunately, a run in the top of the seventh inning allowed Grove City (14-6, 5-2) to take the opener 4-3.
Things started well for Waynesburg (5-12, 1-4), which broke up a 0-0 tie thanks to a two-run triple by shortstop
Todd Burner (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg) in the bottom of the third. The Wolverines tied the score in the top of the fourth and grabbed a 3-2 edge in the top of the fifth.
The host squad knotted things back up at 3-3 thanks to an RBI single from senior catcher
Tyler Woodrow (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine-Richland) that plated Burner in the bottom of the sixth.
Senior pitcher
Joe Sabolek (Lynnwood-Pricedale, Pa. / Belle Vernon) logged 6.2 solid innings on the mound, despite suffering the loss. He gave up all four runs on 10 hits and two walks, while striking out five opposing hitters. Senior
Corey Fischer (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) picked up the final out in relief.
Woodrow accounted for half of Waynesburg's six hits in the early contest with a perfect three-for-three effort that included a double. Burner logged a two-for-three showing, while sophomore third baseman
Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough) collected a hit for the Jackets.
Game two was one to forget for Waynesburg, which fell behind 9-0 heading into the bottom of the second before eventually dropping the late contest 21-3. Burner highlighted Waynesburg's offensive efforts with his team-leading fourth home run of the season, which was a solo shot in the sixth.
Sophomore
Nevin Kostelac (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) closed out the day on the mound with a pair of shutout relief innings. He allowed two hits and struck out a batter. Freshman
Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) started and took the loss on the mound.
The Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, April 6, when they host Thiel for a single PAC contest. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 3 p.m.
