WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 7) – The Waynesburg University softball team hosted Chatham on Thursday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. The two teams had to endure rain, hail and a 30-minute lightning delay, but by the time all was said and done, the Yellow Jackets continued one of their best starts in program history by winning a pair of five-inning decisions from the Cougars.
Waynesburg (15-4, 4-0) took the opener 15-0 and followed that up with a 12-4 triumph in the late contest. Not surprisingly, there were some notable statistical differences between the two teams in the sweep.
The Yellow Jackets hit .500 (27-of-54) as a team and collected almost three times as many hits as the Cougars (6-14, 0-4), who went 10-for-40 at the dish. After entering the day with just one homerun on the season, Waynesburg tripled its long ball total thanks to bombs from sophomores
Emma Bliss (Uniontown, Pa. / Laurel Highlands) and
Ella Brookman (Washington, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston).
Speaking of extra-base hits, sophomore third baseman
Sydney Senay (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) had four doubles in her five hits that came in seven at-bats (.714 average). Junior catcher
Brin Hunter (West Alexander, Pa. / McGuffey) continued her recent hot hitting by also going five-for-seven with the stick.
Brookman led the Jackets in both runs scored and RBIs during the sweep. She crossed home plate five times and drove in six runs.
Waynesburg slugged .778 as a team for the afternoon and boasted a .591 on-base percentage.
All that offense was more than enough support for freshman
Sydney Wilson (Pentress, W.Va. / Clay Battelle), who continued to perform like one of the top pitchers in the PAC. The rookie lefty pulled double duty and improved to 8-1 on the year after working all 10 innings in the circle. She allowed 10 hits and walked two while striking out 15 opposing batters. Of the four runs she allowed, only one was earned.
Wilson currently leads the league in ERA (0.21), opposing batting average (.164), innings pitched (66.0), strikeouts (90) and wins. During game one, she limited Chatham to two singles and a walk, while striking out 10 opposing hitters.
Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, April 9, when it travels to Grove City for a PAC doubleheader. Amazingly, those will be Waynesburg's first true road games after opening its season with nine games in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, over spring break and 10-straight home contests. First pitch against the Wolverines is scheduled to be thrown at 1 p.m.
Grove City and Waynesburg have already played each other twice this year. They split a pair of non-conference contests in Myrtle Beach.
