Men's basketball tangles with Allegheny

Gators' long range attack too much for Jackets in PAC showdown

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 14) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team hosted Allegheny on Saturday afternoon for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest. The Yellow Jackets were overwhelmed by a long range barrage from the Gators that ultimately led to an 89-62 win for the visitors.

Allegheny (10-6, 8-3) connected on an outstanding 17-of-40 three point attempts. Waynesburg (4-11, 2-9) knocked down just four-of-22 from beyond the arc. The home team held a sizeable advantage from the foul line, where it converted 16-of-21 attempts, as compared to the Gators' six makes in eight tries, but it wasn't enough to counteract the visitors' work from downtown.

Not surprisingly, the first made shot of the day was an Allegheny trey that gave it a lead it never relinquished. The Gators raced out to a 30-7 lead after 11:24 of play that set the tone for the remainder of the contest. By the time halftime rolled around, the Jackets found themselves in a 51-26 hole and were unable to put together a comeback for the ages over the final 20 minutes of play.

The Waynesburg offense featured five players scoring between nine and 11 points each on the day. Graduate student Matt Popeck (Washington, Pa. / Washington) and junior Jake Scheidt (Saxonburg, Pa. / Knoch) tied for the team lead with 11 points. Junior Antone Baker (Maple Heights, Ohio / Maple Heights) notched his team-leading fifth double-double of the year on 10 points and a squad-best 11 rebounds, including a game-best six offensive boards.

Juniors Bryson Wilt (Oakland, Md. / Southern Garrett) and Jansen Knotts (Ridgeley, W.Va. / Frankfort) tallied nine points each.

Both teams did an excellent job of protecting the basketball. Waynesburg committed just four turnovers on the day, while Allegheny coughed up possession nine times.

Waynesburg plays its third of four-straight home games on Wednesday, Jan. 18, when it hosts Thiel. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
