WASHINGTON, Pa. (Oct. 28) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team traveled to Washington & Jefferson on Saturday for a quarterfinal matchup in the 2023 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) championship tournament. The Yellow Jackets withstood a barrage of shots by the Presidents over 90 regulation minutes and managed to take the scoreless game into overtime.
The Jackets finally broke up the tie in the 98
th minute and then put the finishing touches on a 110-minute shutout that ended with a 1-0 win and a dog pile celebration.
A pair of Waynesburg (9-6-2) freshmen played crucial roles in a victory that not only advanced to the Jackets to the semifinals of the PAC tournament, but snapped an 11-game winless streak against the Presidents (10-4-4) that stretched back to 2013.
First-year goalkeeper
Alexus Greenlief (Chester, W.Va. / Oak Glen) was outstanding in her first taste of the PAC postseason. Greenlief stopped all 13 shots on goal that the Presidents' put on the Waynesburg net. The number-four seed peppered the fifth-seeded Jackets with 29 total shots on the day.
Hailey Gilchrest (Hanover, a. / Hanover) made all of Greenlief's hard work pay off by finally beating the opposing keeper in the 98
th minute with Waynesburg's only shot in 20 minutes of overtime.
After the game moved into its second overtime period, W&J attempted three shots and a corner kick, none of which were on goal, allowing Waynesburg to celebrate the memorable win.
With Saturday's thrilling triumph, Waynesburg advances to the PAC semifinals, where it will face off with top-seeded Grove City on Wednesday, Nov. 1. The two teams met up for a regular season contest on Oct. 18, which ended with a 2-1 victory for the Wolverines.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
